![]() However, climbing over the "caps" involves some exposed scrambling and can be steep and challenging at times. This route, gaining only 2,700 feet (823 m) vertically to the summit, results in it having the least distance of ascent of any Presidential mountain (about 2.5 miles). ![]() Mount Jefferson has a direct ascent along the Caps Ridge Trail, whose base, Jefferson Notch, is the highest point of any public road in New Hampshire at 3,009 feet (917 m). When viewed from the Mount Washington Auto Road, Jefferson features an arrow-shaped bald patch pointing to its summit. Finally, Monticello Lawn is a large expanse of alpine sedge and rush near the otherwise talus-covered summit cone. Guests can choose to walk through just the Gorge or do a two-mile loop. A trip into the Flume begins and ends at the Flume Visitor’s Center. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart. The mountain gets its name because when viewed from the east its summit ridge resembles the profile of a human face, and the names of its prominent features reflect this: Adams Apple (4,060'), Chin (4,393', highest. There are options to cool down in the Pemi River here. Mount Mansfield is the highest mountain in Vermont being the highest in the state it is also the highpoint of Chittenden County. From the Whitehouse Trailhead, you will hike 0.9 miles in a flat wooded area until you reach a paved road used as a bike path. The mountain is surrounded by the three dramatic glacial cirques of Jefferson Ravine, Castle Ravine, and the Great Gulf. The Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. Both mountains are located in the very popular Franconia Ridge, only a 2 hour drive from Boston. Two distinct ridges lead to its summit: Ridge of the Caps and Castle Ridge. Mount Lafayette is a 5,249-foot (1,600 m) mountain at the northern end of the Franconia Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, United States. It lies in the town of Franconia in Grafton County, and appears on the New England Fifty Finest list of the most topographically prominent peaks in New England. The mountain has several interesting features, making it a popular hike. Mount Jefferson is flanked by Mount Adams (to the northeast) and Mount Clay (to the south). The mountain is named after Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, and is part of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. Mount Jefferson is located in Coos County, New Hampshire, and is the third highest mountain in the state. Thompson and Meserve's Purchase, Coös County, New Hampshire, U.S. As you walk through the Flume, look at the floor of the Gorge and you many notice remnants of the main basalt dike, and on the walls of the gorge, small trees are growing.Mount Jefferson as seen from near the summit of Mount Washington, with the Great Gulf below.Ĥ4☁8′15″N 71☁9′01″W / 44.30420°N 71.31685°W / 44.30420 -71.31685 Coordinates: 44☁8′15″N 71☁9′01″W / 44.30420°N 71.31685°W / 44.30420 -71.31685 The highly fractured granite and basalt have been eroded by frost action as well as by the brook’s water. After the Ice Age, Flume Brook began to flow through the valley again. It partially filled the valley with glacial debris and removed soil and weathered rock from the vicinity. The gorge was covered by glaciers during the Ice Age, but the ice sheet did not greatly change the surface. The basalt dikes eroded faster than the surrounding Conway granite, creating a deepening valley where the Flume Gorge is now. As the overlying rock was worn away, the pressure was relieved and horizontal cracks developed, allowing water to get into the rock layers. Had this material ever reached the surface, it would have become lava flows.Įrosion gradually lowered the earth’s surface and exposed the dikes. Because of this quick cooling, the basalt is a fine-grained rock. The basalt crystallized quickly against the relatively cold granite. The basalt came from deep within the earth as a fluid material, and because of pressure, was able to force the Conway granite aside. The Franconia Ridge Trail is one of the most popular trails in the White Mountains, so you can always expect lots of people if the weather is nice. Sometime after the fractures were formed, small dikes of basalt were forced up along the fractures. Description: Mount Liberty is located in the middle of the Franconia Ridge and has a ledgy peak with excellent views of the surrounding area, including the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Nearly 200 million years ago in Jurassic times, the Conway granite that forms the walls of the Flume was deeply buried molten rock.Īs it cooled, the granite was broken by closely spaced vertical fractures which lay nearly parallel in a northeasterly direction.
